Recovering Lost Pets

First Things First

If your pet gets out, here is what to do. DON'T PANIC! Breathe, and then follow these recommendations. Not everything works for every dog or cat, but these are guidelines.

Lost Dog - non-fearful

For a non-fearful, they are not running scared, but may have run out after a squirrel, or just roaming. Don't chase, but gently call the dog, with yummy, smelly treats (either their favorite, or cooked hot dogs or something similar). Get low to the ground, and see if they will come to you. Maybe play your favorite game.

Lost Dog - fearful

For fearful or abused dogs that are skittish, they may run for blocks or miles trying to get away from what scared them. DO NOT CHASE them, but notify social media, create posters, let your neighbors know. Here is a link to a template for a visible poster.

Lost Cats

Most cats don't stray too far from home. Bring some yummy cat food with you and look everywhere within a 1 block radius. Look under porches, trees, bushes, and everywhere that a cat could hide. Think like a cat - they can hide in the smallest spaces.

Be Careful - Beware of Scammers

Yes, even with lost pets, when owners are vulnerable, there are scammers who will try to play on your sympathies.
